A group photo features around 20 children, teenagers, and adults posing together inside a spacious, bright building lobby with large floor-to-ceiling windows and stone pillars in the background. The Tiny Titans preschoolers trick-or-treated today and yesterday around the school, led by their 'teachers', ARHS students from the Early Childhood Education program. Through the program, students learn about early human development, explore curriculum strategies and concepts, and gain field experience working in our on-campus preschool. PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
Dear ARHS families,

Last week, I attended the Special Olympics Massachusetts Annual Leadership Conference with fellow staff members (below, left to right) Zbysia Giegucz, Stefani Giegucz, and Kevin Hausmann. The conference brought together coaches, program leaders, athletes, and community members to share ideas and strategies for making Unified teams, programs, and communities more accessible and inclusive. Unified Sports is a specific program within Special Olympics that joins individuals with and without intellectual disabilities (called "partners") together on the same teams to train and compete.

ARHS was highlighted several times as one of the state’s exemplary programs, including during the event’s culminating panel featuring students, staff, and family members: three of the six panelists had direct ties to our Unified Track program.

It was a proud moment for all four of us to see our school recognized as a model for creating inclusive opportunities for students. At the same time, we know there is always room to grow. To help guide that work, we are developing the ARHS Unified Committee. Next week, I will reach out to invite interested students and families to join the group and help us identify opportunities to strengthen and expand our Unified program. Please look for a dedicated email with more details.

Have a Happy Halloween!

Sincerely,
Sean Bevan

P.S. Thanks to Junior Eleanor Marquez, whose spooky ARHS logo is featured above. Eleanor created the logo two years for her class, Graphic Design for Publications. Well done!

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

The Algonquin School Council, comprising elected parent and student representatives, as well as members appointed by the principal, serves as an advisory body under Massachusetts law, charged with supporting school improvement planning and providing guidance on key initiatives. Over the course of the year, the group will monitor our school's progress on the actions outlined in the School Improvement Plan.

At our most recent meeting on October 20, Asst. Principal Gitkind joined the Council to provide a summary of interventions we offer in Math, including Title I tutoring and Math Lab. We also discussed plans to govern cell phones (i.e. how to reinforce current classroom norms for using classroom storage options, like shoe caddies), and the actions outlined in the School Improvement Plan.

The meeting slides are available here. Our next School Council meeting is scheduled for November 17.
