PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
Dear ARHS families,

This week, our Guidance Department conducted two-part workshops with our freshmen, focused on understanding bullying, recognizing risk factors, and identifying ways to respond when bullying occurs. Students explored realistic scenarios, discussed the differences between bystanders and upstanders, and considered strategies for safely intervening when they witness bullying. The lessons were designed to prompt students to think critically about how we treat each other at school and beyond and equip them with skills to interrupt patterns of bullying when they see them. The topic of bullying prevention is timely as October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

In the sessions, staff reviewed an important tool we use to help keep our school community safe: Say Something is an anonymous reporting system that gives students a way to report concerns about bullying and other situations that may affect someone's safety or well-being. We encourage families to talk with their students about the importance of speaking up when something doesn't seem right and remind them that they can use Say Something to share a concern.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,
Sean Bevan

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

The Algonquin School Council, comprising elected parent and student representatives, as well as members appointed by the principal, serves as an advisory body under Massachusetts law, charged with supporting school improvement planning and providing guidance on key initiatives. Over the course of the year, the group will monitor our school's progress on the actions outlined in the School Improvement Plan.

At our most recent meeting on October 20, Asst. Principal Gitkind joined the Council to provide a summary of interventions we offer in Math, including Title I tutoring and Math Lab. We also discussed plans to govern cell phones (i.e. how to reinforce current classroom norms for using classroom storage options, like shoe caddies), and the actions outlined in the School Improvement Plan.

The meeting slides are available here. Our next School Council meeting is scheduled for December 9.
