Informational update from ARHS: : Important Technology Updates
Dear ARHS families,
As we ramp up for staff members’ return next week and students’ return on September 1, I wanted to share with you information about the following two important topics: the school’s adoption of Doorman, a cell phone management technology, and the 1:1 Computing Program. Each change has generated questions from students and families, and our team has been working hard to gather the information you need as you plan for your child’s upcoming school year.
Doorman Resources and Timeline
On Monday, I will send out to families an email that contains the information you will need to understand our plan for adopting Doorman. This will include answers to the various questions we have received, a timeline for implementing the program, and the opportunity to attend a virtual parent/guardian forum to hear from our staff directly about the plan. Please monitor your email for that information, which I know is of high importance to many families.
1:1 Computing Program: Overview and Guidelines
The goal of the ARHS 1:1 Computing Program is to provide students with the technology they need to develop and demonstrate the skills and abilities outlined in our school’s Portrait of a Graduate. This includes using digital tools to explore and exchange ideas, communicate, collaborate, solve problems, and deepen learning.
Fall 2026 marks the completion of ARHS’s four-year, phased transition from a primarily “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) model to a 1:1 computing program. The transition has been implemented grade-by-grade, with school-issued devices provided to students in all four grades. The transition reflects several considerations, including system management, security and performance, equity of access, and an appropriate balance between consistency and student choice.
Managing a wide variety of devices within individual classrooms in the BYOD model can create challenges for teachers (and, often, for students). At the same time, some students and families have made individual choices about the technology that works best for them, and many have personal investments in and preferences for particular devices.
The guidelines below are designed to provide clarity and consistency about how the 1:1 Computing Program will be implemented, balancing the benefits of a standard school-issued device with reasonable opportunities for students to use technology of their choice.
The school-issued Chromebook will serve as the standard instructional device at ARHS. Assignments and activities completed during class that require a computer will be completed using a school-issued Chromebook.
Students may use personal computers in less structured settings, including the library, cafeteria, study halls, and public spaces before and after school.
All handbook policies governing acceptable technology use apply to students' use of personal computers, whether in classrooms or less structured spaces.
