Informational update from ARHS: Weekly update, 4/10/2026

Posted Date: 04/10/26 (04:33 PM)

alt_textThis week, we welcomed Algonquin alum Jonathan Todd (Class of 1992), a cartoonist and author, who led an engaging cartooning workshop made possible through generous grants from the Northborough and Southborough Cultural Councils. Since his time as a cartoonist for The Harbinger, Jonathan has worked as an education reporter, author, and political cartoonist. His work has been published in numerous newspapers, including The Boston Globe, The Tennessean, and The Cincinnati Enquirer. His graphic novel, Timid, was featured at the 2024 National Book Festival. PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
Dear ARHS

In February, I noted that I will revisit use this space to highlight how our daily work connects directly to our strategic priorities, making clear how our programs, decisions, and events are aligned to the goals we created last year. One of those goals is to:
“Analyze and strengthen ARHS’s preparation of students for postsecondary success by evaluating current graduation requirements and the Program of Studies, and by accessing DESE-supported programming to provide rigorous, engaging, and industry-aligned coursework.”

This work has involved nearly every member of the staff, and the results can be seen - and will be seen more in the future - in many ways, including:

  • Graduation Requirements changes: In October, the Regional School Committee approved a recommendation to adjust the graduation requirements, beginning with the Class of 2030. The new requirements are designed to increase electives choices for students, boost the rigor that all students need to exhibit to graduate, and bring ARHS into alignment with MassCore
  • Development of new courses: In November and December, we surveyed students to better understand their interests, and faculty developed eight new courses aligned both with those interests and the new graduation requirements. Among others, these include a new AP course (Business and Finance), several new art offerings, two new Math offerings, and a new course (Working with Children) designed to connect Early Childhood Education students with career pathways in child-centered fields. Now that course selection is complete, we are closely reviewing student choices and considering how we can continue to refine our program to ensure that students are both appropriately challenged and genuinely engaged in their learning.
I hope that this helps to make visible some of the ways our strategic plans are showing up in and around ARHS everyday.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,
Sean Bevan
