PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
Dear ARHS families,

This week, we hosted a Career Awareness Event for our entire junior class, providing 280 students the opportunity to learn from a diverse group of professionals representing 14 industries. Students selected three sessions based on their interests, allowing for a personalized and engaging experience. The group included alumni, community members, parents, mentors, town employees, and friends of our faculty and staff. Among other things, they shared their career journeys, helping students to understand more about their own potential career pathways.

Congrats to Michelle Kaelin, who oversees our career explorations program, for pulling it together! And, a special thank you goes out to our student volunteers, many of whom have participated in or will soon begin internships through our new program, for their leadership and support throughout the event. This event was part of a larger effort we have undertaken to strengthen students' understanding of the many and varied careers available to them, helping them to make choices about their classes and, possibly, what they may study after high school.

Sincerely,
Sean Bevan

CELEBRATIONS

LGBTQ Pride Month

LGBTQ Pride Month is commemorated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQ Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQ Americans. LGBTQ Pride Month is an excellent time to talk with students about LGBTQ people and their struggles to achieve equity and justice in all aspects of their lives. It is an opportunity to learn about important LGBTQ people in history, read literature that features LGBTQ people, analyze heterosexism and explore its causes and solutions

Juneteenth

“Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.” - What is Juneteenth? - History Channel
