PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
Hi ARHS families,

I apologize that I am just now sending Friday's update today; we had technical issues that prevented me from scheduling it to send on Friday, which is my typical practice! Anyway, here it is:

I am happy to report that we had a great first two days of school: the weather was lovely, and the students brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the building, which was a welcome change from the quiet of the summer.

Last week,  the administrative team completed some key tasks related to the opening of the year, including having meetings with all four grades. In those meetings, we welcomed the students back and reminded them of some important, just-in-time information about our school. We also emphasized a point I shared last week, that our faculty will be working together to reduce the distraction that cell phones can create in classrooms by uniformly requiring students to place their phones in caddies or bins at the front of the room at the start of each class. Many, many teachers already use this best practice with success, and the research is clear that limiting access to phones during class supports both mental health and focus. I am writing to enlist your support by discussing this change for your child, emphasizing that it is designed to improve their ability to engage fully in their learning.
This week's events:
  • Wednesday, September 3: Day B schedule (BCDEFG)

  • Thursday, September 4: Day C schedule (CDEFGA)

  • Friday, September 5: Day D schedule (DEFGAB)

Upcoming events:
  • Sept. 4: Student and Staff Picture Day
  • Sept. 16: Parent-Teacher Open House 6:00-8:30 pm
  • Sept. 17: Regional School Committee 7:00 pm
  • Sept. 23: Rosh Hashanah - No School

Our Peer Mentors—several dozen dedicated upperclassmen—planned and led activities for Freshman Orientation, helping ninth graders find their way around the school, get acquainted with our practices and traditions, and meet key staff. Each year, we induct and train a new group of student leaders to welcome our new students with enthusiasm and support. Thanks, Peer Mentors! (Photo credit: Matt Gitkind)
