Informational Update from ARHS: Weekly update, 10/17/2025

Posted Date: 10/17/25 (4:51 PM)

Our senior leaders organized and pulled off a fantastic Senior Class S’mores Night this Wednesday, combining delicious treats with a fun tie-dye activity. A big thank-you to our seniors, Senior Class Advisors Ms. Burns and Mr. Staines, and the Northborough Fire Department for their collaboration in making this a memorable evening! PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
Dear ARHS families,

We quietly had a newsworthy week at ARHS: on Wednesday, the Regional School Committee officially approved a change to the ARHS graduation requirements, effective for the class of 2030 and all classes thereafter, a shift that I proposed in an effort to strengthen the academic rigor our school requires of its graduates and to align with MassCore, a State-recommended course of study that reflects the expectations of colleges, universities, and employers. The details of the change are outlined in this proposal, and the slides from the presentation are here. The change results in the following:
  • Increase the requirement in Math from 3 years to 4 years
  • Increase the requirement in the Fine and Performing Arts from 1 semester to 2 semesters
  • Create a 2-year requirement for World Languages
  • Eliminate the requirement for students to take either Digital Literacy or Exploring Computer Science
Notably, approximately 90% of our graduates in any given school year already meet these standards in Mathematics and World Languages. For those who face challenges in these areas when requirements increase, we will provide targeted support to help them achieve success. And, I am confident that adding a one-semester requirement in the Arts will deliver benefits to students' mental health, creativity, and overall enjoyment of their school experience.

Another key element of the change is that Digital Literacy/Exploring Computer Science will no longer be required (though each course will remain in our electives catalog for those who choose to enroll in either or both). This change stems from our conclusion that many of the skills taught in these courses are now embedded throughout the broader curriculum, ensuring students continue to develop them in authentic, real-world contexts.

Since this change is significant and worth deep and thoughtful consideration, I met with the following groups and received helpful feedback as my team and I considered whether our current requirements could be improved: the Algonquin School-Based Leadership Team, the Algonquin Parent-Teacher Organization, the Algonquin School Council, and the Student Advisory Council to the Regional School Committee.

I am excited about this change - the first significant update to our graduation requirements in decades - and confident that it will position all ARHS graduates for success beyond high school. I’m deeply grateful to the committee members, stakeholder groups, and students whose thoughtful feedback helped shape a proposal that I know will benefit our students.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Sean Bevan
